(At the request of RIZIV - September 2021)
This rapid review of the evidence assesses the clinical utility of multiplex PCR (mPCR) tests for the diagnosis of acute respiratory infections during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, infections caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus but also other viruses such as influenza virus or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Multiplex PCR tests allow for a rapid molecular identification of these different pathogens.
The aim of this report is to determine whether these mPCR tests lead to a better patient management (including hospital infection control strategies) and avoidance or better steering of further investigations or treatment. This research is important for making an evidence-based decision on the possible reimbursement of these tests.
