Healthcare is a highly complex field, and no single scientific training can encompass all of its multiple facets. This is why, at KCE, we have opted for a truly multidisciplinary approach. No study is ever conducted by a single researcher; instead, each research question is examined from a medical, economic, social, legal and/or ethical perspective, as appropriate. This approach is much appreciated, both by the end users of the study results and by the researchers themselves.
Our experts fall into several categories:
- Researchers with a clinical background: physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, dentists, psychologists, all of whom have acquired complementary skills (usually a PhD) in subjects such as public health, epidemiology, guidelines development, data management and analysis, etc. Some have been or still are clinically active, which enhances their understanding of the field, while others have committed themselves to full-time research at KCE.
- Researchers trained in health economics. Thanks to their expertise, we are able to conduct very thorough economic assessments, including Health Technology Assessments (HTA). Their contribution is also essential for our studies on the organisation and financing of healthcare, an area for which KCE expertise is increasingly sought.
- Researchers trained in other human sciences. Sociologists conduct qualitative studies: they collect data from field experts, patients, stakeholders, etc., and ensure their rigorous processing. Other researchers allow us to discuss the possible legal or ethical aspects of our various research questions.
- Data analysts, statisticians and specialists in scientific information. They extract the information and figures that are relevant for our research from international and Belgian data. They also ensure that privacy regulations are respected when handling potentially sensitive data, that all useful information is identified and that figures are interpreted correctly. This allows us to collect very precise statistics.
- Specialists in knowledge management and dissemination. Thanks to the former, all our experts can maintain and develop their expertise, and the quality of our work is guaranteed with the help of meticulous work procedures. The latter adapt the language of our reports to various target groups and ensures that the message reaches the appropriate audience.
KCE is a very horizontal, small-scale organisation with well-honed work procedures, where decisions are made in an efficient and concerted manner. Our experts can also rely on an array of support services (ICT, webmaster, library, communication, layout, secretariat, accountancy, etc.), which make up a small but enthusiastic team.
