Indirect hospital costs as a mark-up percentage on direct costs in Belgium
KCE Reports 380C (2024)
In the future, hospital funding should evolve towards a system where each establishment receives a lump sum based on the severity of patients’ pathology, which will cover all care-related costs. Such lump sums will be calculated based on actual costs. However, in addition to direct operating costs (e.g. those relating to staffing levels or medical equipment), this calculation will also have to take into account so-called indirect costs (e.g. maintenance costs of the premises, administrative staff costs). KCE has been commissioned to calculate these indirect hospital costs in the form of a mark-up percentage on direct costs.
