After having completed the studies on right to be forgotten in breast cancer and type 1 diabetes in November 2024, the KCE has commenced a study on thyroid cancer with the purpose to update the current reference grid. For people diagnosed with papillary or follicular thyroid cancer, it currently foresees the following waiting times after completion of active treatment and without disease progression:
- stage I, age at diagnosis: under the age of 45 years: 3 years
- stage I or II, age at diagnosis ≥45 years: 3 years
- stage III, age at diagnosis ≥45 years: 6 years
The request for revision concerns a reduction in these waiting times.
Following a call for proposals launched in December 2020, the next pathologies prioritized within the KCE “Right to be forgotten” programme are:
- Stage I melanoma: Only melanoma in situ is included in the Belgian reference grid, while the Netherlands also considers stage I melanoma with a waiting time of 7 years. The request for revision concerns a reduction of this waiting period as well as a clarification of the discrepancy between the Belgian and Dutch grids.
- HIV: The scientific basis for the current criteria in the reference grid is not entirely clear or is under discussion, which requires further research. France has recently updated these criteria in its reference grid.
Any person or association concerned by a cancer or chronic disease (citizen, health care provider, patient or consumer association, policy maker...) could respond to this call.
All proposals were evaluated by a KCE-jury, based on pre-established criteria (see Selection Procedure page) in order to select the most relevant topics.
